If you were anything like me when I started out, then you didn’t have a clue about what should be on your voice reels. There’s so much advice all over the internet and many people who feign knowledge just to get their paws on your hard earned cash!
It’s a minefield of do’s and don’t’s.
The thing is, even after working in the industry for a while now, I have no idea what makes the PERFECT voice reel. But I do know this – you shouldn’t try to be something or someone you’re not.
Just because someone else has a <insert style here> clip on their reel, doesn’t mean you have to, too! You should celebrate what makes you uniquely you (whilst offering some diversity, of course!)
So here’s my top 5 tips on what should be on your voice reel.
- Each reel should be tailored to a specific genre. No commercials mixed with gaming clips, please!
- Understand your USP (unique selling point) and build around it. Sell you!
- Focus on the performance rather than just how you sound. We want to hear how truthful you can be.
- Accent variations are great for gaming reels – just make sure they’re perfect.
- Make it no longer than 2 minutes.
Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list but it should help guide you towards creating those perfect reels!
Now get out there and create – I’m looking forward to hearing ‘em!
